about

A song based primarily on Field of Hopes and Dreams from Deltarune - with a touch of Reunited from Undertale as well. Both games and their soundtracks are by Toby Fox tobyfox.bandcamp.com

After hours and hours of work I've finally finished this. It's been the main song I've been working on for months and it's gotten to be a hassle at points. It's stopped me from working on almost any other song because I WANTED to finish it. I started it the 27th of August of 2019. I really wanted to release it by Deltarune's anniversary on the 31th of October, but as you can clearly see that did not work out lol. I finished it on the 2nd of April of 2020. Luckily I have many other things to do besides music.

Lazy title, of course - I just ripped off Homestuck. But it's alright, since the original FoHaD was a reference to it anyways. Neat comic.

It's not REALLY an orchestration? It has chiptune instruments from the getgo, because I like how they sound combined with piano. Actually, I had them play alone with a piano twice in the song. Maybe I just really liked this: twitter.com/sylcmyk/status/1193927102325608448?s=20

Took me about... 85 hours of work? FL Studio isn't perfect at counting hours since the timer still goes up if you have it on the background... but only sometimes? As the project got bigger, I had to wait a bit for it to load when I opened it, so I switched to other stuff, and didn't react immediatly when it did. Plus, once it did load, I had to wait for the sounds to load, and at those times the time counter was probably going up. Finally, I know for a fact I left it for about 10 hours in the background once. So I'm discounting 14 hours from the count of 99 it reports.

A lot of that work was after I finished the main composition, and consisted on tweaking a lot of little things to try and make it sound good, with only a few new things here and there. At some point I wanted to just be done with it but didn't want it to end up being really bad because of bad mixing/dynamics. I wasn't gonna let the rest of the work go down the drain for something like that.

One of the reasons it was so frustrating to get everything to be at the right volume and combine with everything else is that I wanted to, in general, have EVERY single instrument follow a different melodic line. I still have a few unison lines here and there but for the most part I managed to accomplish that goal. As a result, it was much more frustrating to try to perfect and the song ended up being much messier and busy, since I still have a lot to learn. And I hope I did learn from this. On the flipside, if you pay attention there are a lot of little details you can spot. Drums are as hellish as always for me, by the way.

The whole ending section - after the second piano+chiptune part - was the biggest headache. You have no idea how bad it used to sound.
That piano section itself, by the way, was my original sketch for the song. I added the chiptune later on to make it a little more interesting, but otherwise I think it's the same. I made that sketch one day, and really liked it, and wanted to make it into a full orchestral composition. The end of the song was supposed to be that original idea, but I couldn't make it use the same weird modified melody and chords because it didn't sound that good. The rest of the song came about because I thought, "surely the song can't start here?", so I started working on a beggining. At first, the start of the song was at 0:28. But then I added the initial piano to have a calmer beggining.
